GoodDollar Governance Re-Vision: Stage 0

Hello, GoodDollar community!

To briefly introduce myself, I made my way to GoodDollar through my work as Ecosystem Growth Lead at DAOstar, where I contribute to public goods and collaborative research that supports the DAO ecosystem. After participating in the first and second rounds of the GoodBuilders program as a mentor for the DAO and governance track, I began to collaborate with GoodLabs as Governance Lead, responsible for designing and directing changes to ecosystem governance and GoodDAO.

And so with this post, I’d like to present the GoodDollar Governance Re-Vision: a first step towards the next iteration of GoodDollar’s governance system. Its goal is simple: to redesign governance and GoodDAO into a system that truly empowers the global community to shape and grow GoodDollar’s future.

The purpose of this post is threefold:

  1. Introduce the GoodDollar Governance “Re-Vision”
  2. Provide context and a progress update
  3. Open up the conversation to invite participation and feedback

Building on the recent upgrades to the GoodDollar protocol and strategic changes to the project, I’m excited for the next evolution of GoodDollar governance to continue growing the community and collectively building an inclusive, regenerative monetary system that provides economic opportunity for all.

Background

GoodDollar and V4

Since its inception, GoodDollar’s mission has been to provide a decentralized model to generate and distribute Universal Basic Income (UBI) through the G$ token. Earlier this year, the protocol took an important step forward with the launch of GoodDollar V4.

Since GoodDollar’s launch in 2020:

The upgrade to GoodDollar V4 followed a pause in G$ minting and Reserve liquidity after the Ethereum Reserve was exploited—a challenge that also created an opportunity to rebuild stronger. GoodDollar V4 introduced a new Reserve on Celo, making the protocol native to the chain. As a result, minting has resumed, liquidity is restored, and the Reserve is now more accessible, resilient, and aligned with the community’s needs.

With the protocol now relaunched, the next opportunity is clear: revitalize governance and empower the community to play a bigger role in shaping GoodDollar’s future.

Ecosystem Growth

The vision for the GoodDollar ecosystem is expanding. While global access to UBI remains at the heart of the project, the stage is set to grow a sustainable economy on top of GoodDollar’s open infrastructure. Builders and community members are already contributing by developing use cases that reflect shared values—promoting inclusivity, prioritizing regeneration over extraction, and democratizing the creation and distribution of money.

This also means creating more opportunities for every G$ holder to do more with their tokens and take part in building a stronger economic system that benefits everyone. This also raises the question of how the Protocol and the DAO can support this growth beyond distributing G$ as UBI.

The GoodDAO has a central role in guiding this expansion: ensuring that governance becomes the tool through which the community sets priorities, supports builders, and leads the growth of the GoodDollar ecosystem. Initiatives such as the GoodBuilders Program highlight the creativity and alignment of contributors building on GoodDollar. While not a GoodDAO initiative today, it showcases the broader potential of the ecosystem and the importance of a strong DAO to coordinate, support, and amplify this growth.

Currently, GoodBuilders Round 2 is live! Already 13 projects are building on top of GoodDollar—spanning savings, bill payments, liquidity incentives, education apps, new money distribution models, real-world applications, and more. The round is still open for more projects to join, and you can vote to decide which projects receive more funding based on their impact, potential, and progress.

Introducing GoodDollar’s Governance Re-Vision

Why a Governance Re-Vision?

This is the right time to rethink and reevaluate the role of governance, including the distribution and utility of the GOOD governance token and its alignment within the community.

The initial governance model was built on strong principles: to distribute control to the GoodDAO early in the protocol’s lifecycle, ensure GOOD tokens were accessible and non-transferable, and empower members to take part in shaping GoodDollar’s growth.

Four years later, 24 governance proposals have been passed—mainly concerning protocol changes and community moderation grants. In practice, however, most proposals have been initiated by the Good Labs Foundation, while voting decisions have been dominated by large token holders. Community members have voiced concerns about the complexity of the governance process, and the lack of clarity around how to successfully bring proposals forward.

Additionally, while the GOOD token and governance model exist on Fuse and Ethereum, they have not been deployed on Celo—the chain where the community is most active today, and where GoodDollar V4 has made the protocol natively at home.

All this highlights the need to build a governance framework that lowers barriers and enables real participation.

The Governance Re-Vision addresses GoodDollar’s social layer—that is, the system employed by its globally distributed stakeholders to contribute and collaborate, make decisions about protocol changes and shared resource allocation, and support GoodDollar’s mission. Towards this end, the Governance Re-Vision will reevaluate and rebuild GoodDollar’s foundational governance framework, which includes GoodDollar’s governance structures (i.e. GoodDAO), processes (i.e. GoodDollar Improvement Proposal, or GIP), and mechanisms (i.e. GOOD governance token).

The initial objectives—and mechanisms to achieve them—of the GoodDollar Governance Re-Vision are as follows:

Objective Mechanism
Enhance the effectiveness & efficiency of initial decision-making Governance Steering Committee (see below)
Increase community engagement New governance documentation & governance redesign campaign (coming soon)
Promote transparency & accountability Governance roadmap & timeline (coming soon)
Chart path towards decentralized management of the GoodDollar treasury Capital allocation framework (coming soon)

Stage 0: GoodDAO Governance Steering Committee

The first step, “Stage 0,” in the Governance Re-Vision will be the assembly of a GoodDAO Governance Steering Committee (“GSC”)—a collection of individuals who will provide expertise, continuity, and operational support in establishing priorities and upholding legitimate processes for governance of the GoodDollar ecosystem. The GSC will play a crucial role in the initial redesign of GoodDollar’s governance system, which includes revamping foundational documentation, shaping processes and tooling, and defining a governance roadmap.

The first iteration of the GSC will consist of 5 total members for an initial term of 3 months—to be selected by the Good Labs team and Governance Lead—and will include Good Labs team members, builders in the GoodDollar ecosystem, active community members, and value-aligned partners from external ecosystems. Initially, GSC membership will be performed on a volunteer basis. Moving forward, we will seek to progressively decentralize selection to the GSC, with the end goal being through a community voting process.

The GSC won’t eliminate decentralized decision-making, but rather ensure it remains structured, transparent, and effective.

The priorities during the GSC’s first term will be to:

  • Draft a GSC mandate that includes the committee’s operational principles and rules
  • Ratify a governance mission (i.e. “north star” document) that defines the values and purpose of GoodDollar governance
  • Initiate and lead a collaborative governance framework redesign campaign with the community (more to come on this soon!)

On an ongoing basis, the responsibilities of GoodDAO’’s GSC will include managing community contributions, ensuring clear and transparent communication around the GSC’s decision making, as well as conducting governance research and development.

High-Level Timeline & Next Steps

Timeline Next Steps
September 19 Final GSC member selection & announcement
End of September Hold first committee meeting (date TBD)
Beginning of October Launch governance redesign campaign
End of October Publish governance “north star” document

Conclusion

With this next phase for GoodDollar and the Governance Re-Vision, the opportunity to meaningfully influence the future of the biggest experiment in UBI and financial inclusivity has never been greater. During this formative period for GoodDollar governance, we aim to consistently seek community input and feedback that will help us co-create a financial system where money is created and distributed according to shared values—a system where everyone’s voice matters.

As such, please share any thoughts or questions in the comments, and if you’d like to be considered for selection to the GSC, please reply to this post with the following information:

  • Name
  • Brief history of contribution to GoodDollar and activity in the ecosystem

Name: Lana Dingwall

Brief history of contribution to GoodDollar and activity in the ecosystem:

  • I’ve been actively involved with GoodDollar over the past year as both a Good Builder Mentor and through my work as a builder with Spinach.fi, where we integrated $G as a payout token for other builders driving TVL and usage of $G. I also work with the Glo Dollar team and have collaborated closely with GoodDollar to align on shared public goods and community goals.

On the governance side, I’ve contributed to several communities:

  • Octant – Member of the Governance Design Council, shaping its community grants and governance structure.
  • GreenPill Network – Helped launch the network and served as a core steward.
  • Gitcoin – Elected to the Community Council, supporting community-driven funding decisions.
  • CharmVerse – Was a contributor on the grants design team working with Polygon, Cyber and other blockchains.

Together, these roles reflect my commitment to designing and scaling governance systems that strengthen public goods ecosystems, including GoodDollar’s.

Overview of my contributions within the GoodDollar ecosystem:
I have been an active member of the GoodDollar community since its launch in September 2020. Initially, I joined with the intent to donate all my daily G$ claims to Pesia’s Kitchen, a food bank I operate. This initiative aimed to integrate GoodDollar into charitable efforts, providing meals to those in need. Over time, my involvement deepened. I became an official GoodDollar Ambassador, advocating for the project and its mission. I pioneered various initiatives, including fundraising campaigns that successfully attracted significant support from the community. I have contributed to and participated in community calls, forums, and a variety of GoodDollar and community-driven initiatives. My journey reflects a commitment to leveraging GoodDollar for positive social impact and community empowerment.

Hey Sam, thanks for the initiative. This is an essential aspect of the protocol and I’m glad your on it.

I do wish to be part of the committee, here’s my application:

Name: Thales Barbosa

Brief history of contribution to GoodDollar and activity in the ecosystem:
I’ve been serving as GoodDollar’s data analyst, building and maintaining the core data infrastructure, the dashboards and reports that the community and GoodLabs rely on.
My focus has been on turning raw numbers into clear stories — so everyone in the community, from core team to builders to claimers, not only has access the data, but also understands what story it’s telling us.

I’m building the Builders Impact Dashboard from scratch, created the metrics and KPIs behind it. I migrated and now maintain the main dashboards from Dapplooker to Dune + The Graph — saving the org thousands of dollars a year — and expanded the automations and reporting infrastructure that keep the ecosystem running. My Builders project, the DAO Gold Standard for Data Transparency, extends this work into governance itself, to bring clarity on this aspect of the protocol as well.

I know where the data lives, I know how to extract it, I know how to put it in context, and how to make it meaningful and actionable. I can chart the governance landscape, pinpoint the critical levers, and design the north star metrics and KPIs that measure progress in ways everyone can understand. Just as I’ve brought clarity to claims, invites, and builder impact, I’m committed to doing the same for governance — giving the committee the insights it needs to make wise, aligned, data-driven decisions.

Hello to the GoodDollar community,

I am writing to express my profound interest in joining the Governance Steering Committee (GSC) as outlined in the Governance Re-Vision.

My name is Salva Perez, and I have been a member of the GoodDollar community since its very beginning, even before the official launch, during the proof-of-concept phase. In those early days, before the role was formally defined, I acted as an organic ambassador, promoting the project and its vision of Universal Basic Income within my network.

My commitment to GoodDollar’s mission has been constant throughout all these years. I have made several attempts to launch initiatives in my region (Spain) that would use G$ as a backing or tool to capture and exchange other values—both social and environmental—always with the goal of connecting the digital potential of the protocol with tangible impacts in the real world.

My motivation for joining the GSC stems from this experience and a clear conviction: I am very interested in exploring and helping to design how, through governance, we can more deeply connect the G$ ecosystem with a regenerative ecosystem that operates not just in the virtual world, but in the real world. I believe the future of GoodDollar and its sustainable impact inevitably depends on this integration.

In terms of logistics, I have the availability to commit approximately 2 hours per week to committee-related work.

I am very excited about this new phase for GoodDollar and would be thrilled to contribute my long-standing perspective, my passion for the mission, and my vision for a regenerative ecosystem to the work of the GSC.

I am at your disposal for any questions.

Sincerely,

Salva Perez

Hello!, I find the development of the Dao that could emerge from the implementation of the committee very interesting. I would also like to apply to contribute to the construction of the Dao. My current experience with Gooddollar was as a moderator for two years. I joined as a claimer user from the very beginning, following Gooddollar’s public launch. Within the crypto ecosystem, I have little more to comment on than my fascination with Blockchain and my affinity with the disengagement of a universal basic income. I believe I have a good understanding of the Gooddollar ecosystem and the need to make the Dao work, which is why I would like to contribute to the committee. I currently have about three hours a week to volunteer for the Dao.

History of contribution to GoodDollar / activity in the ecosystem

I’m part of the GoodLabs Foundation for the last 4 years, where my work has been focused on growing the GoodDollar ecosystem — across strategy, partnerships, governance, communications, and community.

I’ve also been closely involved in governance at GoodDollar. That experience gave me first-hand insight into the gaps and challenges in our current model, and motivates me to help shape a governance process that’s clearer, more accessible, and truly community-driven.

Why I want to be on the Governance Steering Committee

My background is in politics, which is what first drew me into Web3. I was inspired by the chance to rethink how governance works and create systems that are more inclusive and transparent.

For me, the Steering Committee is also an opportunity to reframe how we manage public goods. GoodDollar itself is a public good, and how we govern it will define its long-term success. I believe the project cannot succeed without a community that truly rallies behind it, and governance is how we make that happen.

What I bring to the Committee

Strong strategic perspective and deep knowledge of the GoodDollar ecosystem through my role at GoodLabs.

First-hand understanding of the gaps and challenges in past governance.

Background in politics, with a focus on systems, governance models, and collective decision-making

Focus on accessibility and clear communications

My Fellow Community Members,
This is no doubt that, since my encounter with the Good dollar as a decentralized model and Universal Basic Income project as only a claimer and influencer of Good dollar ecosystem.
I am a new in the system but too much like to be part of the Government Steering Committee (GSC). This is as a result of my positive attitude that whatever one can do everyone can do it rightly or more than that in as much as such person is fixed within the rightful channel and I believe that, I am completely fixed within that Chanel.
Furthermore, I’ll be made available to attend community activities 10 hours everyday and 70 hours per week.

Community Education & Initiatives: Creating content, leading discussions, and encouraging members to better understand the protocol and ecosystem.

Understanding of the Protocol: Through hands on engagement, I’ve built strong knowledge of the GoodDollar protocol, its values, and the unique community driven structure it fosters.

Why I Want to Serve on the Steering Committee:

The community is the lifeblood of the GoodDollar project, and moderators who interact directly with members every day will play a vital role in shaping the future of governance. We are uniquely positioned to surface feedback, highlight challenges, and channel fresh ideas into actionable proposals.

If selected, I will:

  • Advocate for transparent, inclusive, and accessible processes that empower grassroots members to participate meaningfully in governance.
  • Strengthen the communication bridge between governance and the wider community, ensuring clarity and trust.
  • Contribute to shaping clear guidelines and processes that make governance easier to navigate for newcomers and experienced members alike.
  • Help identify challenges early and channel community feedback into constructive proposals.

Bandwidth: I am able to dedicate 4–5 hours per week to committee responsibilities, including meetings, planning, reviews, and outreach.

Thank you!

Hi @sam_mccarthy

My name is Progress Birah, and I would love to be considered for the GSC.

I have worked as an ambassador for the Nigerian community, helping to build the community and also helped to set up new communities in Abuja and Lagos communities. I have represented gooddollar in blockchain events in my country, helping to spread the word.
I have also contributed as a community manager with gooddollar, where I coordinated the ambassador program, coordinating with the ambassadors from the various countries. It would be an honour to help build the rebranded DAO protocol.

I am available for 5-7 hours weekly commitment for the steering committee duties

Hi all, I’m Tereza, and I’d love to be considered for the GSC. :raised_hands:

I was a mentor in the first GoodDollar Builders round and really enjoyed getting to know the projects and people building in the ecosystem. I’m a tech writer and communications professional passionate about amplifying projects that leverage technology for good, with a particular interest in how Web3 experiments translate into real-world impact. Through my work with Crypto Altruists and other ReFi communities, I’ve highlighted GoodDollar as one of the most tangible examples of using blockchain for positive change.

I’ve been curious about governance and would love to observe how this process takes shape! I could contribute 2–3 hours per week.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Hi everyone, and thank you @sam_mccarthy for opening up this important discussion.

I’m Francesco (“Fran”), founder of the Superfluid Protocol. I’ve been following GoodDollar for a long time and have always admired its mission. I’m proud that Superfluid has been integrated into the GoodDollar ecosystem, and I’m excited about the potential for even more applications to leverage both protocols in ways that expand real-world impact and utility for G$.

Looking ahead, I’d love to participate more directly in governance as the GoodDAO evolves. I believe collaboration between aligned projects is key to scaling financial inclusion, and I look forward to contributing my perspective and support as this new governance framework takes shape.

While I sincerely don’t have much bandwidth, if accepted I’d bring in some of our resources from the Superfluid Foundation to assist when needed. Namely our governance lead Amin. So I’d ask to consider my participation on the GSC as a “Superfluid Seat”

NAME: Yakubu Ibrahim (Dankwarai002)

BRIEF HISTORY OF MY CONTRIBUTION IN THE GOODDOLLAR ECOSYSTEM:

My Fellow Community Members,
This is no doubt that, since my encounter with the Good dollar as a decentralized model and Universal Basic Income project as only a claimer and influencer of Good dollar ecosystem.
I am a new in the system but too much like to be part of the Government Steering Committee (GSC). This is as a result of my positive attitude that whatever one can do everyone can do it rightly or more than that in as much as such person is fixed within the rightful channel and I believe that, I am completely fixed within that Chanel.
Furthermore, I’ll be made available to attend community activities 10 hours every day and 70 hours per week.

Thank you very. much.
